i went to a lecture at uc berkely given by clement greenberg, mr. authority on ab ex (abstract expressionism), plus i was an artist in residence at stanford and learned about the bay area figurative. i certainly have a full range of ideas about north american painting, european painting really is the foundation of my work; and being a mestizo is another great contradiction." esteban chavez Born in Denver, CO in 1954, Esteban has an undergraduate BFA from UC Berkeley, CA, 1982, and a MFA from the Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT 1985. He is a professional artist residing in NY from 1985. Spring of 2003, Esteban received a Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. In addition to his original oil works he is also an accomplished sculptor, architectural photolithographer, lithographer. |
From the artist in response to how he describes his technique...
"i have been reading about the abstract expressionists, how the canvas became the object, just the scale and tenacity in which they painted upon. i think i am part of the north american tradition in that i attack the canvas and let the physical presence of the pigment have a life of its own. it really does not matter if it is abstract or figurative it is the actual physical presence that the paint has on canvas. also i have been reading matisse's ideas about how color is all about orchestration as a totality, a chorus. so indeed it is good to be able to articulate what i am doing, as art historical. |

Esteban Chavez 1954 - Realist, Contemporary, Social Political Commentary Beyond the Tradition Produced 2017 Oil on linen 57" x 42" Price not yet determined Narrative/Artist Commentary This painting is a story about a nasty predatory that harvests the life energy of humanity and the planet. Like the Borg it has no face but an energy frequency. |
The male nude represents a fatted bull, a human cattle ready for harvest. The stage setting is a rococo Watteau painting of the elite cavorting on a fantasy island called Cythera, oblivious to the coming of the French revolution. They were killed in that revolution.
So as humanity awakens to this continual tyranny of being the hosts for this predatory energy the predators unleash violence to control humanity at this time. One can see this in the senseless wars, the destruction of the planet, and growing rebellion in the cities all over the planet.
My paintings are exercises like etudes in tonal composition. When the two main figures gained a certain credibility in visual formality and tactile presence I ended the investigation in drawing with oil. The open spaces are a contemporary sensibility that reveal the process of art making why make a traditional painting finished for the corporate board rooms or sterile museums? This in my view is beyond the tradition. I paint to satisfy my continuing inquiry seeking an understanding of the structure of this madness called civilization.
