Fikru Gebre Mariam is an internationally acclaimed Ethiopian artist with a gallery in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is charismatic and passionate about his art and is certainly enjoying the fruits of his illustrious career thus far which has included periods of living, studying, and exhibiting in prestigious galleries abroad. His works are now collected and displayed in many private collections by art lovers around the world.

As a young boy he enjoyed painting so much that his parents enrolled him in the children's program at the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa. This led to him winning at an international children's painting exhibition in Beijing, China. It was at this point that art became his serious objective and he is grateful that his father, albeit hesitantly at first, supported his son's wishes to pursue art as a career.

Fikru Gebre Mariam is considered an important artist of his time as one who has brought modern abstract impressionism to Ethiopia. Esseye G. Medehin, artist and art historian, rates the significance of his art for Ethiopia on the same level as the art by Jackson Pollack for the USA.

Painting mainly large canvasses, some that will take up to a year to complete, Fikru often revisits his paintings changing them according to his mood or how he feels about the canvas when viewed a second time. He says, "I have an ongoing and constant dialogue with my paintings, they are like a diary of my life; the way I express my anger or my happiness is through my art."
